Subject: Who started "Save Darfur" ? Ruth Messinger.

A Prophetic Voice in Jewish, Multireligious, and American Life

Who started the Save Darfur movement?

Ruth Messinger.

So The Shalom Center is honoring her as a Prophetic Voice of our own generation --  on this Sunday afternoon,  April 6,  at Mishkan Shalom congregation in Philadelphia.

Ruth heads American Jewish World Service, which brings Jewish service-workers (herself included, shirtsleeves rolled up), money, and talent to the aid of the desperately poor on many continents.

In the process of that work, Ruth saw - literally saw --  that what was happening in Darfur was becoming genocide, and  she began to mobilize the Jewish community to act, out of the Jewish commitment  "Never again" - not for Jews, not for anyone.

What emerged has been breathtaking - a mass outpouring of Jewish commitment and action NOT focused on a Jewish ethnic interest, like Israel or Soviet Jewry - but on a Jewish value about danger to others.

It was the first outpouring like that since the Jewish involvement in the civil-rights movement of the early '60s, and even that did not have such broad and deep support.

And this energetic commitment of the American Jewish community brought many others to understanding what is happening in Darfur, and acting to stop the massacres and shape a decent peace.

So that is why we are HONORING her.

We welcome you to join in meeting her, hearing her speak, speaking with her, honoring her  --
From 3:15 to 5:30 Sunday, a public honoring at which Ruth will get to speak, along with Rev. Shalom, salaam, peace --  Arthur
