John Kerry: This is a critical time.

Hello Stefan,

Last night was a big night in Massachusetts: that sound you heard was the glass ceiling being smashed into a thousand pieces.

Democrats voted to make Martha Coakley the first woman ever to represent Massachusetts in the United States Senate.

And man do we need another strong progressive voice just like Martha right now.

Ted Kennedy taught us for 47 years that if Democrats want to see our progressive values enacted into law, we have to fight.

But the first fight we have to win is the general election in just a few short weeks.

Here's where you come in.

Please give what you can to help Martha bring her strong progressive voice to Washington.

The Republicans are targeting this seat, trying to hold back the progressive tide.  Already they're trying to rally Republicans to elect someone who will "block" the Obama agenda.

Well, when Massachusetts goes to the polls to choose a new Senator one day shy of President Obama's one year anniversary in office, we need to elect a Senator who will fight with me to pass that progressive agenda, not block it.

Martha needs all the help she can to hold on to Ted Kennedy's historic seat - and make her own mark in the fight for health care, jobs, climate change legislation, and our fundamental freedoms.

This is a critical time. We've come a long way, but - believe me - I see every day that we still have more road to travel. We need more progressive Democratic Senators to break the power of the status quo and give us the reform we need.

Martha Coakley needs to be our next Senator, and I need you to help her.

Please give what you can.

Let's go make history,

John Kerry

Subject: Stand Up For Truth. Fight To The Finish Line!

Hello Stefan,

Yesterday, the contrast between the campaigns in the Presidential race couldn't have been more obvious. Barack Obama spoke to the nation about the struggles of everyday Americans. He laid out his vision for voters and his plans for America. He showed us what kind of President he would be. And he showed us that he cares.

Meanwhile, the McCain campaign lurched from attack to attack, slander to slander, swerving, insinuating, twisting, and smearing Barack Obama. While Barack Obama promises to cut tax cuts for 95% of Americans, they actually have the nerve to tell the American voters that returning the wealthiest 5% to Clinton-era taxes is "socialism." Please!

The Straight Talk Express is running on empty, more dangerous than ever as it sputters to Election Day. These attacks are all McCain has left. We can't let them succeed. We've fought for years to end the era of Karl Rove politics. If we keep up the pressure, we can finally tell George Bush, Sarah Palin and John McCain, once and for all: you don't get to tell us who the real Americans are!

You can support our fight against the Republican lies and low-blows by donating to TruthFightsBack:

There are only 5 days left in this amazing election. We can't let up. We don't want to look back and wonder what else we could have done. We want to look back and smile that we got it done! So let's pull out all the stops and not let up for one second until we've won a stronger progressive majority in the US Congress and elected Barack Obama as the next President of the United States.

Thank you,

John Kerry

Brian Young: John McCain hopes you delete this!

Hello Stefan,

If you're like tens of millions of others, you've gotten an email with a subject line like that. A forward of an email with a catchy, titillating subject.

Only they are never about John McCain. They're about Barack Obama. And they are almost always filled with distortions, misstatements, and outright lies.

We started to deal with smears, and those types emails were a big motivator for us. And, thanks to all of you, TruthFightsBack has been a great success.

But we can do better. We know that when you get a smear email, you want to get the truth fast, and you want it laid out in a way that can convince the undecided, swing voters. So we began a new project of called the Center for Political Accuracy focused specifically on this aspect of fighting anonymous smear emails in real-time, and we've got an exciting new tool to use in this battle.

You can email me at with your smear and our system can read your smear and get me our researched response immediately, and I'll email back a reply debunking the original email. This can all happen in 10 minutes or less, so you can be armed with the truth and reply to everyone who got the original smear.

Just copy this email address into your address book, and make sure to email me right away next time you get a smear.

Thank you so much for joining the fight against smears.

Brian Young

That's hundreds of thousands of people ready to vote for change in this country

Hello Stefan,

Today, I'm going to ask you to do something simple, but so important. Get at least one person registered to vote. If it's you, register now. If you're already registered, get someone you know to register.

One of the biggest enemies of getting real change and making a real difference in our politics is apathy. When more people take a stake in our politics and our democracy, we can break the power of the right-wing insiders who work for the rich and not for the rest of us. The lobbyists and their power brokers lose out when the American people rise up.

And the most important thing we can do is vote, and get others to vote. Now, you are probably already registered, but maybe you have recently moved and need to re-register. Or maybe someone in your family needs to register. Well, Barack Obama's campaign and the Democratic National Committee have set up a great website where you can register to vote.

It's incredibly easy, it takes just a couple of minutes, and it works. So take a minute, check out the website, and if you need to, register.

And, most importantly, get at least one other person to register. Forward this email to as many people as you can and ask them to register someone to vote. If we can get a tidal wave of new people to the polls, we can wash out the apathy and the cynicism and get a new start in this country, get a politics that works for normal people and not just the well-off and the well-connected.

Already hundreds of thousands of people have registered on That's hundreds of thousands of people ready to vote for change in this country, hundreds of thousands who can stand with us to bring about the new government our country so desperately needs.

Try to get at least one more, but get as many as you can. If we all do this, we can overwhelm the politics of the past and get a new start.

"OF PEACE & BEAUTY I WILL SING!" The Shalom Center, Rabbi Arthur Waskow

A Prophetic Voice in Jewish, Multireligious, and American Life

Friends of peace & beauty -

One of the Psalms begins, "Of love & justice I will sing."  Today, in the painful moments of working for peace despite a government determined on war, we need a psalm that goes -

And we have one. It is a psalm in cloth - a Shalom Quilt made of dozens of T-shirts that have called out in colorful and quirky words and images for peace, justice, and the healing of our wounded earth.

The Shalom Quilt was "peaced together" by professional textile-artist Amy Smith of Blue Feet Studio.  We are raffling it off as a way of raising money for The Shalom Center, while bringing its beauty into someone's home.  In a normal sale it would cost $1800.

I guarantee you it will warm your bed and warm your heart and enlighten your eyes all at the same time -- and help to create warmth and compassion around the world by supporting The Shalom Center's work .
The raffle works this way: You buy one ticket for $10 or one set of three tickets for $18, more for multiples of those amounts.  Print out and use the coupon below, or send us the same information on your own note.  You send a check to The Shalom Center, 6711 Lincoln Drive, Philadelphia PA 19119, earmarked "Quilt." We'll send you the raffle tickets. Beginning June 1, the price will go up to $18 per ticket -- so sign up now!  The drawing will be held on July 4 --  in honor of those unalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, may they soon be restored to the American people and all others.

With blessings of beauty & shalom --  Arthur

John Kerry: History in the Making by Robert Weinerth. Using Obama's three key words, we see America's past and future

Hello Stefan,

A heads-up as I thought you'd be interested: has done something pretty innovative --  their new "Obama In 30 Seconds" contest where thousands upon thousands of activists submitted their own 30-second campaign ads for Barack Obama. Now MoveOn is looking for you to judge the best.

History in the Making
by Robert Weinerth

Using Obama's three key words of "hope, action, change", we see America's past and future

I think it's great that MoveOn has opened the process and gotten people involved. You're no stranger to this kind of online activism - remember,  last summer, for our radio ad targeting the Roadblock Republicans for blocking a new course in Iraq, rather than go to some ad agency, we asked everyone here in the community for submissions. We got thousands of scripts, and ended up with a powerful ad written by one of you.

So I just wanted to drop this quick note because I thought you might be interested in this initiative.

John Kerry
